Ruben Amorim’s tenure as Manchester United head coach has officially begun, but his first competitive outing was not the smooth start fans hoped for. On Sunday evening, United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Ipswich Town in the FA Cup, leaving the Portuguese tactician with plenty to ponder.
The match got off to a promising start, with Marcus Rashford scoring a quick-fire goal in just the second minute. However, United failed to capitalize on their early dominance. Omari Hutchinson leveled the score for Ipswich shortly before halftime, and United struggled to regain control.
Amorim, known for his tactical acumen, acknowledged after the game that his system would take time to embed. He emphasized patience, saying the team would need to "suffer" before they could fully adapt to his methods.
Post-match reports suggest that Amorim was less than impressed with the performances of several key players, including Diogo Dalot, Joshua Zirkzee, Rasmus Højlund, and even the usually reliable Rashford. Pitchside analysis by Owen Hargreaves also highlighted the coach's dissatisfaction with United's lack of cohesion.
Adding to the difficulties was United’s defensive setup, which included an unfamiliar back three of Jonny Evans, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui. Dalot, playing out of position as a left wing-back, struggled to make an impact, while Amad Diallo occupied the right flank.
Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Amorim has urged United to prioritize signing a left-back in the upcoming transfer windows. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano stated:
"Manchester United WILL sign a new left-back or left wing-back. Ruben Amorim is very happy with Diogo Dalot as a professional and a leader. However, the message from Ruben Amorim is clear: they need a player who can consistently cover the left-back position, allowing Dalot to focus on his natural right-sided role."
Targets reportedly include Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. Davies, whose contract expires in 2025, is a particularly appealing option and has also been linked with Real Madrid.
